Creative Patriotic Touches

Love this patriotic porch from Saavy Southern Style!

With this being an election year, Memorial Day this weekend and Independence Day just a month away, we are feeling the inspired and thought it’d be fun to share some cute ideas to bring some patriotic touches to your home!

Pillow inspirations from The Inspired Room.

Personally, changing pillows is the easiest and economical way to tie in new colors, patterns or themes. To add a patriotic touch, think ticking, thick stripes, classic stars (shapes or patterned), even polka dots to give the eye the overall feeling of a recreated flag. Here you can see some of our red, whites and blues at the shop.

A mix of patterns in red, white and blue give a less-literal take on the patriotic look while still looking stylish and contemporary!

And don’t forget to add buttons for a nice detail too!

Great button detail from The Cottage at the Crossroads.

And hey! Why not frame Old Glory? The beautiful thing about our grand ole high-flying flag is not only the stirring and passionate hard-fought beliefs it represents, but it’s beautiful too!

Have any of these ideas inspired you? Come in to the shop to see all the different patterns we can mix and match for you to create this look for your home too!

Have a safe and reverent Memorial Day weekend, friends!

Feeling the Blues in the best way!

There is something about Springtime that makes you crave clean, fresh and bright. Lately we’ve been seeing gorgeous versions of classic blue and white and it has us all so inspired. We even have an entire corner of the shop dedicated to it! So, we’ve compiled a few of our favorites in the shop and thrown in a few fun ways to use it around the house too! We hope you enjoy!

Mixing patterns and textures can be an easy way to update a piece seasonally. Here, mattress ticking is paired with a snuggly chenille throw and two contrasting pillows. If you notice, one pillow hearkens to the pattern and color of the chair, while the other gives a nod to the darker navy blue accents in the room. The trellis patterned rug gives the eye a nice spot to rest.

IMG_1799

Our display currently at the shop magnifies that principle. The cobalt chinoiserie chair compliments the abstract cobalt rug mixing traditional and modern quite nicely. The textured fabric of the chair on the right is extended throughout the look thanks to the nubby blue throw tossed on the chair to its left.

To top it off, the lamp brings the look back full-circle to the chinoiserie slip-covered chair giving the scheme a cohesive flow. Add a little striped ottoman and you have a modern classic look that is cool and fresh for Spring and Summer!

Try living in a world without pillows. Sounds horrible, right? Comfort aside, adding decorative pillows can create huge impact without breaking the bank and you can change them so easily, as your mood and the seasons dictate!

Here, shape, texture, color and scale are used to demonstrate how all fifteen (15!) patterns could be mixed and matched together  in various groupings and still create a scheme that looks intentional and stylish, whatever the theme.

And as you can see we have dozens of different fabrics to choose from to help you achieve any look you can imagine! From modern, bold, traditional, tropical or clean and simple- we not only have the fabrics and accessories, but we have a full staff of talented interior designers and consultants to help bring your ideas to life!

How do you like to use blue? We’d love to know! Comment here or on our Facebook page!

Designing a Room? Start with a Beautiful Fabric!

In a recent article at freshome Design & Architecture Magazine, our beliefs were confirmed regarding the basis for interior design in #6 of 10 Mistakes That (Almost) Everyone Makes in Interior Design.

#6: BUY FABRICS AND TEXTILES FIRST

“A common mistake that most of us are guilty of—painting first. Put that paint brush down! First, you need to pick out the rooms fabrics and main textiles, such as rugs and curtains.

Why is this? Because it is simply much easier to find fabrics that we love and then pick out paint to match. While it is much harder to find a fabric that we love, that also just so happens to match the paint we have already put on our walls.

So, with budget and room size in mind, go for a shopping excursion. Look through samples of fabrics, rugs, pillows etc… Find what you love and then once you are happy with your design choices, pick out a paint shade or shades from the chosen textiles. Now you can pick up the paint brush.”

The Hickory Chair Furniture Co. began one hundred years ago in Hickory, North Carolina with a single product and a simple vision. The product was a made-to-order dining chair.

Design Trends Now

Trends in design are unique and creative for 2014! They mingle new and old, modern, and classic, all in the same room. Layering textures and patterns while using a neutral background in wall color or large upholstery pieces sets the backdrop for adding pops of color in accessories, lamps, pillows and rugs.

Picture17

Picture21

The influence of metals, especially brass is currently trending. Simple furnishings and the mixing of antique pieces with some modern accents (think Lucite tables or metal and glass) is very much in style.

Picture9

The use of natural elements like cork, driftwood, reclaimed wood, leather, and metal is the ongoing trend in decorating.

Wallpaper is making a comeback, but with more creative uses, like wallpapering behind shelves or in small niches and built-ins. Grass cloth makes a great background in small, as well as large areas. Smooth metallic and tone-on-tone geometric grass cloth brings a touch of the high end look to any room.

New accent colors include yellow, found in hues ranging from citron to brassy gold; as seen on accent pillows or lamps.  Contrast your yellows with turquoise, navy blue, or gray tones. The aqua and turquoise palette are still strong and brings a calming effect to the room.

decorpad

There are many fabric trends, starting with geometrics. Although widely used, we like a softer side in a smaller scale and in much smaller doses. Florals have returned and are mixed in with geometrics and textures.

Picture8 Picture18

Sheers are also new this year, achieving a modern look with metallic sheers. A soft and relaxed look by using sheer linen or cotton voile will bring an ethereal look to the room. The men’s influence in fabrics is also a nice welcome. Tartans and plaids, menswear, and leather will create a relaxed and comfortable setting. Ikats are still current, but as accents, and used to dominate the room.

Picture11 Picture12

Overall, there are many new trends going on, and many that are being revived. With this new whirlwind of choices, you have to make sure that what you choose to beautify your home makes you happy! Your design should be your own personal choice and reflect you, no matter what trend is going on. Embrace your inner designer and have fun.

Visit the shop today or call for an appointment. It is always helpful to bring pictures of your windows, furnishings to be upholstered or area rugs  as a basis for beginning your design project. Simple measurements of windows or furnishings can be helpful as well.

If you’re not quite ready for that appointment, come by the shop at 1410 Market St. and look for your inspiration in colors, textures and styles. Our selection of in-stock decorator fabrics in the largest in the area, and our designer sample room offers the designer in you a wide array of choices.

Home Renovation & Redesign Therapy

Today we feature a guest post from our friend and customer, Amanda Karioth Thompson. We are humbled at her expression of thankfulness; we’re inspired by her benevolent spirit.

It all started in September of 2012 when Judy asked me what paint color might be best to update her dining room. As a friend with an artistic eye, she thought I might be able to offer advice. After 14 months of renovation, dozens of  gallons of paint, hundreds of yards of fabric, countless light fixtures, furnishings, rugs, art, accessories and some major construction, we officially concluded the project that began, innocently enough, as a spiffing up of the dining room.

3-diningroom

Home renovations, even minor ones, are like that. Once you get going, they tend to snowball. That was certainly not Judy’s initial intent (nor mine) but after five years immersed in grief over the death of her teenage son Christopher, Judy made up her mind to return to the land of the living. This wasn’t just a home renovation, it became design therapy. It was hard work emotionally, mentally and physically.

There wasn’t an inch of the nearly 3,000 square foot house that we didn’t address. It took many people to bring this project to   fruition, and the team at Chrysalis was instrumental in the successful outcome.  Almost all of the fabrics we used throughout the house came from Chrysalis and the entire staff was so supportive. They cheered us on, offered insight, gave us referrals and eagerly inquired about the progress. The fabrics from Chrysalis were used to reupholster furniture and create custom draperies, bedding and accent pillows.

In   addition to the structural and cosmetic changes, there was a significant change in Judy. With each layer we peeled away, each photograph we framed, each family heirloom we highlighted, she began to slowly emerge from her grief.

Over time, Judy gave herself permission to feel good again and to enjoy her surroundings. She has come to believe that she has a right to joy and beauty. With support from friends and a lot of exhausting work, she clawed her way out of the deep crevasse of sadness. Judy has opened her eyes to a world where doing something good for herself doesn’t mean she has forgotten her son or that she misses him any less.  In fact, his presence is palpable in the house and Judy is now surrounded by beauty, comfort, light and love.

Thank you Chrysalis for helping to make that  possible!
