Sitting Pretty with Leticia Graves

Our talented staff is taking time this summer to create idea vignettes for you with a new series we’re calling SITTING PRETTY. We’ve just added a neutral sofa to the showroom and each person on staff will offer you a glimpse into their own unique design prowess. In this way, we take the intimidation out of using fine decorator fabrics in your home and encourage you to spark a few ideas that can be incorporated into your style.

I am Leticia Graves, better known as Letty. I was born and raised in Mexico City, Mexico and graduated from The Interior Decorating Institute. I worked at an architect firm in Mexico City for four years doing residential and commercial decorating. When I married we moved to Clearwater, FL and I began working at a wallpaper store.  Once we moved to Tallahassee, I gained more 2013-06-12 17.15.32expertise while on staff at Wallpaper It Now, doing consultations and window treatments. When at home with our two baby girls, I created a home business, fabricating window treatments, pillows and other decorating projects.

As the girls grew old enough to be home alone, I re-entered the design world and am happily employed at Chrysalis Fine Fabrics. Here I found the perfect match for my passion for textiles and color. While working at Chrysalis, I continue to enjoy time in my home studio, perfecting the art of creating numerous types of window treatments. Although I find a diverse variety of styles in decorating appealing, I’m partial to more casual/modern fashion and rustic architecture. My hobbies, include spending time with family (Marcia & Julia now 18 and 15)painting, restyling furniture, and knitting.  I also love outdoor activities such as swimming, hiking, and canoeing with my family – Marcie & Julia, now 18 and 15, and my husband Gary. I’ve thoroughly enjoy working here at Chrysalis Fabrics and have developed a tight bond with my work family, Suzanne, Krista, Susan and Danna. We have a great team!  2013-06-12 16.52.10 Here at Chrysalis Fine Fabrics & Furnishings, we recently began displaying a sofa for our SITTING PRETTY design series. With the new addition to our store, the staff will be taking turns designing the pillows, throws, and other accessories that complement a neutral background – offering you design ideas in colors and textures that may be used in your home. Reflecting my personal taste in casual design, I chose a cool palette of turquoises, greens, and tans, giving it a relaxed look for the simmering summer. Note the vintage side tables (reclaimed and repainted) and a beautiful and functional Dash & Albert rug. The round tablecloth and lamp compliment the cool colors and create a complete – cohesive design. This look is perfect for the casual room in your home or at the coast!

a summer project!

All our friends and customers know by now that we’re enjoying our new summer hours Tuesday – Saturday and we thank you for that extra day. With the shop closed Sunday and Monday through July, we now have time to freshen and brighten our own homes for summer and to jump knee deep in the projects that we’ve been longing to do. The summer season is a fun time to begin new endeavors, try something a little different and frankly -have some fun!

Up-cycle, repurpose, reface, vintage and salvage are daily buzz words for the creative and we are embracing our passion with a few new finds. In future posts we’ll show you our newly painted and upholstered seating, but today we’re excited to show you something outside our “fabric forte”. Our staff began a team project using MILK PAINT! 2013-06-11 13.05.01

Milk Paint is an ancient all-natural paint containing basic ingredients including milk protein (casein), limestone, clay and natural pigments. When absorbed into the surface, Milk Paint will never chip or peel. It is suitable for both interior and exterior applications and is naturally mold resistant. Milk paint provides a completely breathable coating and is ideal for painting wood, plaster, drywall and a variety of other surfaces.  It is environmentally friendly, non-toxic and contains no VOCs.

With the Milk Paint Bonding Agent you can use Milk Paint on even more surfaces such as previously painted walls, varnished surfaces, ceramic tiles, metal, glass etc.  Without the bonding agent, Milk Paint will resist some prefinished or prepainted surfaces to achieve an authentic “chippy” look. Starting with a vintage oak china cabinet, our vision was to use a medium blue interior and white along the outside of the piece.

Step #1. Suzanne mixed the dry paint with water using our household blender!

Step #2 Suzanne and Letty started the transformation using the MILK PAINT!

Step #3 Letty applied a coat of clear wax over the dry paint and buffed it to a soft finish.

The end result is a colorful creation that would be perfect at the coast filled with towels in a bathroom, a farm house breakfast room with your favorite dishes or in your home studio filled with embellishments and accessories. We invite you to visit Miss Mustard Seed for other ideas and for a tutorial on using MILK PAINT.
